I Want It and I Want It Now

I’m the type of person that when I want something, I want it NOW. I do not like to wait and I do not like to be told no. Can you relate? If so keep reading…

If I want something, I usually figure out a way to make it happen. Sometimes that is by budgeting money differently to make a purchase or trip reality, sometimes it from hard work, sometimes it is asking for help with a project, and sometimes it is giving my hubby the puppy dog/I love you face. Whatever it may be, I try to make my “want or desire” fulfilled in a timely manner.

I am currently facing a want that I can’t just snap my fingers, bat my eyes, or work toward making happen in a timely manner. This is a want or maybe a desire that is out of my control, which means it is 100% out of my comfort zone. I’m a planner and a control junkie. I mean checklists, planners, researching, control is my strong suit. Right now that strong suit can’t help me. So how do I get through this season of wanting & waiting? How do I get through a season that I have no control over? With God.

4 Steps to Make it Through the Waiting

1. Read God’s Word

Our biggest comfort in ALL things life throws at us comes from the word of God. When you are in the waiting, I think it is important to cling to some inspiring words. I suggest finding a passage of scripture or short verse to hang onto during this difficult season of waiting. Something that speaks to your heart. You want the passage to be relevant to you. Pray this verse over your life and situation.

I was actually watching a bible study today from Teachers in the Word, they suggested writing scripture on an index card and hanging it on your mirror as a reminder. I love this idea!

The words that help me in so many situations are: Be Still and Know

Psalm 46:10 – He says, “Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among nations, I will be exalted in the Earth.” Exodus 14:13 “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Psalm 62:5 “My soul, wait in silence.”

What verse(s) or passage of scripture will help you in the waiting?

2. Understand that God is Able

Jeremiah 32:27 says, “I am the Lord, the God of all the peoples of the world. Is anything too hard for me?”

2 Corinthians 9:8, “And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.”

Think of your current desire, need, or want for your life. Is it bills stacking up? On the verge of losing your home? Marriage falling apart? Your family needs saved? Addiction? Infertility? Lost your job? Cancer? Mental health? Anger overtaking you? Secrets haunting you? If you said yes to any of those or have a different circumstance in your head right now know it is NOT too big for our God. God is able. You know the best part? He knew your “want, need, or desire” before you even thought about it. Before you had time to ask him, he was already working.

Take these lyrics from Way Maker by Leeland to heart.

“Even when I don't see it, You're working Even when I don't feel it, You're working You never stop, You never stop working You never stop, You never stop working”

I don’t care what you have been told our God is able. He is a God of miracles. Our God is the same today, yesterday, and forever. That means he is the same God that: turned water into wine, opened the eyes of the blind, healed the lame, parted the seas, walked on water, fed thousands with two fish, raised Lazarus from the dead, gave Abraham a son at age 100, and this list of miracles could go on.

Ephesians 3:20-21, “Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.”

3. Trust His Guidance

Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for disaster to give you a future and a hope. In those days when you pray, I will listen.”

Let me be clear, this is HIS guidance and plan not yours. He is listening to your prayer and working that prayer to his plan for his good. That means you need to crumble that piece of paper, delete that note on your phone, and erase your own plan. It is time to open your heart and mind to fully accept God’s plan.

Now hear me, I haven’t fully done this yet. Wait..what? She is telling us to do this and she hasn’t? Yes., because just like you, I am a work in progress. I am struggling to accept the idea that my plan and my desire for my life right now, may not be a part of God’s plan for my life. THAT IS HARD. To manage I am following these steps too. I continue to dive into his word, seek him, and pray for guidance and trust.

Proverbs 16:9, “We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.”

Please know I am not saying to give up on praying for your plan/want. I’m suggesting to open your heart and mind to prepare and accept God’s plan. That means continue to pray for your want, but adjust it to match Jesus’ prayer to God. Letting God know your ultimate desire is his will for your life.

Luke 22:42 “Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from. Yet I want your will be done, not mine.”

Trust me I know it is scary to loosen the grip to your own control and planning. I also know that once we do the outcome is worth it and more than we could ever imagine. God’s plan may not match our plan, but he promises us goodness. And when God makes a promise he is faithful.

Psalm 27:13-14 “Yet I am confident I will see the Lord’s goodness while I am here in the land of the living! Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.”

4. Wait with Patience

When you are in the waiting, the pain of waiting seems to linger. It can cause us to feel like God is moving slow or that he forgot about our request for our “want.” You may find yourself asking or saying, “How much longer God?” “Why haven’t you answered my prayer yet Lord?” “I’m losing strength to wait, I need a sign you are listening.”

We live a life of busy schedules and rushing. Will Reagan’s song Not in a Hurry is absolutely beautiful and has helped me through the waiting process. It reminds us not to be in a rush, to listen for his voice, and to just rest in knowing he is near. When you take time to be patient and listen during the waiting, you will begin to hear God speak.

2 Peter 3:8-9 says, “But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends; A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think.. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.”

Our world aides us in being impatient, but God’s work cannot be rushed. This is your current season. Although you cannot see the full circle plan, God can. Our creator has already written our story. You were not meant to know exactly when this particular “want, need, or desire” would be fulfilled..

Ecclesiastes 3:1 says, “For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.” Verse 11 continues with, “Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.”

Any relationship in life requires some degree of patience. Our relationship with God is no different. We must be patient and faithful. Always remember that when God asks us to wait, he is giving us time to grow. Then his reward for the wait is worthwhile. God’s timing is always the perfect timing.

Acts 1:7 says, “He replied, “The father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know.”

Your current “want” fulfillment may not look the way you thought it would and more than likely it doesn’t fit your time schedule, but it will be exactly when and how it was supposed to be. As difficult and scary as it can be to let go of our planning and controlling tendencies, we have to give God a chance to do his work. When we allow him to do it his way, on his schedule, and how he sees fit it comes right on time. Take time during the waiting to recount God’s previous faithfulness in your life and rejoice in promises he has already fulfilled.

With Love,

T

Dear Heavenly Father,

Today I pray for the man or woman reading this. Lord, I don’t know what they are needing, wanting, and desiring for their life. But God I do know you are able. Lord I ask you to help this individual loosen the reins to their life plan. God help them to open their heart and mind to your plan. Lord I am believing with them for the want they are desiring but more than that God I pray your will be done in their life. We know you are the all mighty creator and best author of our life. Lord bless this person abundantly. I ask you bless them with even more than they are asking for. As they wait for your timing remind them of your faithfulness. Thank you Jesus for guiding us and loving us enough to take over our plans to bring us goodness. You are awesome and we love you.

Amen
